School Integration

According to a 2014 report by the UCLA Civil Rights Project, New York City’s public school system is the largest and “one of the most segregated in the nation”.

Equity in school enrollment is an important first step on the road toward real integration in NYC, and we fully endorse Teen Take Charge’s HIgh school Enrollment Equity Plan:

  1. Set academic diversity thresholds for incoming freshman classes

  2. Include schools’ incoming student proficiency rates, college readiness rates, and avg. SAT scores in the NYC High School Directory

  3. Replace the Specialized High School Admissions Test with proportional allotment

We also acknowledge the comprehensive nature of segregation in NYC’s schools, and recognize that Real Integration can only be achieved by addressing the “5 Rs of Integration”:

  1. Race & Enrollment

  2. Resources

  3. Relationships

  4. Restorative Justice

  5. Representation
